MEET THE CIO-CHALLENGER TEAM
The Challenger Oceanographic Research Circle (CIO – CHALLENGER) was formed with the initiative of a group of undergraduate students from the Faculty of Fisheries of National Agrarian University - La Molina (UNALM) under the direction of Dr. Luis Alfredo Icochea Salas, specialist in fish oceanography and main professor of the same house of studies. The formation took place in 2017, after the national event of the "El Niño Costero" that occurred in the summer of that year, which impacted society, the economy and the environment in different ways.
On September 21, 2017, the CIO – CHALLENGER became official after the approval of resolution No. 0124-17/Fa.Pe. And since then, it has focused on data analysis and processing and its improvement. This is reflected in each of the publications made from the Oceanographic Bulletin No. 1 to the more than 70 Bulletins published to date, in addition to the weekly reports and projects in which the circle has participated.
Currently, we focus on the growth of each of our members, to strengthen their analytical, digital and creative capacities through the discussion of scientific articles and their dissemination, which allows them, in turn, to develop capacities for teamwork.
The circle has more than 50 members divided into the sections of biology, microbiology, extraction, physics and meteorology, chemistry, application to mariculture and pollution by plastics and nets, all around the oceanographic field. As we also have the Ocean Literacy area, where we seek to spread general knowledge of our oceans and resolve common doubts about them.
Internationally we have members from the Universidad de Bogotá Jorge Tadeo Lozano, Colombia, and the University of Marine Sciences and Technology in Tokyo, Japan.
Study of the different processes that occur in the ocean system and its relationship with hydrobiological resources for the contribution to the scientific community and its use.
Acquire, process and analyze oceanographic data applying new programming technologies and AI integrating the results to the fishing sector.
Determine the conditions of the ocean on a small and large scale through the analysis of data collected by oceanographic equipment in real time.
Thoroughly study the El Niño Event and the processes involved.
Disseminate information about the oceans on a regular basis as a contribution to Ocean Literacy.
To be the leading organization in oceanographic studies and predictions that contribute and encourage sustainable fishing and generate the main projects of social - ecological - scientific contribution at the national level.
Investigate, propose and disseminate oceanographic information at a national and international level for the strengthening and sustainable development of the fishery and other related industries as well as to expand the culture of the ocean.

Strategic Alliance with Incubagraria - UNALM, with whom in cooperation the construction of this first official web portal of the CIO - CHALLENGER has been achieved.
Strategic Alliance with the Tokyo University of Marine Sciences and Technology - Japan, where more than 5 of our members are carrying out and have carried out their exchange, master's and/or doctorate studies at the Laboratory of Dynamic Ecosystems of the Ocean under the direction of Dr. Nagai Takeyoshi.
